Geoff has had the opportunity to travel with Caterpillar to Peterborough, England a couple of times this year for 2-week stints. First in January and then in April. During his April trip, I had the opportunity to travel out there for 5 days. Nana (Geoff's mom) and Grandma (my mom) graciously offered to come and take care of Micah and Emma while I was traveling. :-)
I left Raleigh on Wednesday evening, April 2 and arrived in London early Thursday morning. Since he was already in Peterborough, Geoff gave me very detailed instructions on how to get from Heathrow to Peterborough...This involved me taking a train, the "underground", and then another train. It was quite an adventure, but I arrived safe and sound! (Although my hands were a bit blistered from hauling my suitcase the whole way...including up and down many flights of stairs!)
Since Geoff had to work during the day on Thursday and Friday, I found things to do on my own both days. On Thursday, I explored Peterborough and spent a few hours at the indoor shopping mall directly across the street from our hotel. Then, on Friday, I took the train about an hour away to Cambridge and spent a few hours walking past many colleges and universities there.
Here's a few pictures from our trip that you might enjoy:

This picture is for all you Jane Austen fans. Here I am in front of "The Burghley House" which is the home used in the 2005 production of "Pride and Prejudice" as Lady Catherine De Bourgh's residence. My "glazed" expression is due to the fact that I was feeling a bit carsick after my dear hubby's "English" driving on our way up to Stamford. Unfortunately, we ended up arriving too late that evening for a tour of the inside, but just seeing the exterior was breathtaking. Although, for all of you North Carolinians, it has nothing on the Biltmore Estate!

When we arrived in London on Saturday morning, we checked into our hotel "The Darlington" and then headed out on foot for the rest of the day.
As a side note, you will notice that I'm sporting a lovely, very thick scarf in the remainder of these pictures. Despite Geoff warning me that it would be cold, I arrived in England without a very warm coat, scarf, or gloves. Fortunately, I located a great thrift shop in Cambridge where I spotted this great scarf. It was a lifesaver...and now whenever I wear it, I will feel very English!
Also, I must give credit where credit is due. Geoff did a great job as our trip photographer...taking all the pictures, including the ones of both of us. No, we never used a tripod or asked someone passing by to take our picture...Geoff's long arms came in handy to fit us both in the frame!

In front of Buckingham Palace on Saturday. We were disappointed to find that the guards were not wearing their black fuzzy hats, but more of a "plain" uniform. No royalty sightings by the palace either. On our first day in London, we also walked through Hyde Park, saw Kensington Palace, and ate some great chips at a pub called "The Kings Arms."
On Sunday morning, we woke up and it was snowing! This picture was taken by the street running in front of our hotel. We didn't let the snow or wind deter us...We still had lots of London to see! Our day included seeing Big Ben, attending a morning church service at Westminster Abbey, visiting the Tower of London and seeing London Bridge, some (window) shopping at Harrod's, and more chip eating.
Here we are at Trafalger Square. If you look very closely, you can see Big Ben (looking very small) on top of my head. It was by Trafalger Square that earlier that morning we spotted a runner with the Olympic Torch! It turns out that on that very Sunday, the torch was traveling through London. What great timing, but we wished we could've gotten a photo of it. It happened so fast, though, that we couldn't get the camera out of the backpack fast enough!
Monday morning, Geoff drove back up to Peterborough for one more week of work, while I took the underground back to Heathrow to catch my flight to Raleigh.
